Follow Luke's Journey
The Early Signs My Cat Had Diabetes (That I Almost Missed)

Looking back now, the signs were there.
At the time though?
I honestly didn’t realize how serious things were becoming.
Like a lot of cat parents, I thought maybe Luke was:
- just getting older
- extra hungry
- drinking a little more because of the weather
- acting “slightly off”
Nothing seemed dramatic at first.
But slowly, the little things started adding up.
And eventually, I realized something was very wrong.
🚩 Drinking WAY More Water
This was probably one of the first major signs.
Luke suddenly seemed obsessed with water.
I noticed:
- more trips to the water bowl
- drinking for longer periods of time
- refilling the bowl more often than usual
At first, I didn’t think much of it.
Now I know excessive thirst can be a HUGE warning sign of diabetes in cats.
🚩 Peeing More Than Normal
Of course, with all that extra water came more trips to the litter box.
I remember thinking:
“Wow… I feel like I’m cleaning this constantly lately.”
Again, it happened gradually enough that I almost normalized it.
🚩 Constant Hunger
This one really threw me off.
Luke acted hungry ALL the time.
And because he wanted food constantly, part of me assumed:
“Well, maybe he’s fine if he still has such a good appetite.”
But excessive hunger can actually be another major symptom of feline diabetes.
🚩 Weight Changes
This part can look different depending on the cat.
Some diabetic cats lose weight quickly.
In Luke’s case, his body condition began to change in ways that just didn’t feel healthy anymore. He was always pretty heavy, but I started noticing he didn’t feel the same. When I pet him, I could feel his spine, which wasn’t as prominent before.
Looking back now, I wish I had paid closer attention sooner instead of assuming things would fix themselves.
🚩 Lower Energy
Luke still had his sweet personality, but something felt… off.
He wasn’t quite as energetic or playful.
Sometimes he just seemed tired or uncomfortable.
It’s hard to explain, but as pet owners, we usually KNOW when something feels different with our animals.
Trust that instinct.

💔 The Hard Part
One of the hardest things about feline diabetes is that the signs can sneak up slowly.
You don’t always wake up one day and suddenly realize:
“My cat is seriously sick.”
Sometimes it happens little by little until one day you look back and realize all the signs were there.
That part still hurts to think about.

The early warning signs I almost missed with Luke.
❤️ What Happened Next
Once Luke was diagnosed, I completely changed how I approached feline nutrition.
I started researching:
- low-carb diets
- high-protein wet foods
- species-appropriate nutrition
And honestly?
That journey changed everything for both of us.

⚠️ Important Reminder
If you think your cat may have diabetes, please talk to your veterinarian as soon as possible.
Early diagnosis can make a HUGE difference.
🐾 Final Thoughts
I created this blog because I know how overwhelming and emotional this experience can be.
If sharing Luke’s story helps even one other cat parent recognize the signs earlier, then it’s worth it.
